October Is Adopt-A-Dog Month ®

American Humane established Adopt-A-Dog Month® in October 1981 as an annual event to encourage people to save lives and enhance their own lives by adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group.

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Marie, there are even more reasons to celebrate Adopt-a-Dog month. According to American Humane, which organizes Adopt-a-Dog month every year, at any given time, an estimated three or four million animals can be found in shelters waiting for their forever home. With the devastation caused by the storms, even more animals are in need of rescue.

During Adopt-a-Dog Month, American Humane encourages people to become a hero by adopting a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. You might be saving a life and, at the same time, improving your own life in ways you could never imagine.

One of our local shelters – Tri-County Animal Rescue (where one of our team of local SEO company experts adopted her dog, Loki) – received a lot of damage from Hurricane Irma. As WPTV News channel 5, our local NBC affiliate, reported:

“Trees now block the animal walkways. A large tree fell on top of the building where animals get around-the-clock medical attention.

“And then I got that fateful call during the night at two o’clock in the morning that the building one of our buildings, the sanctuary house the roof had collapsed inside of it,” said Allen Trowbridge, the organization’s operations manager,

Once the roof caved in, staff members had to pack up the animals during the storm and move them to the main house.

Now it’s tight quarters in the main building because the sick animals have to be quarantined.

The organization is on a mission to raise funds to replace the damaged building.
Sharon DiPietro the chairman, is leading the cause. “We are going to put a modular unit in its place. It’s going to be a pre-fabricated home, not a trailer, but a home that sits on a foundation.”

She hopes it happens soon. “We are trying to move with expediency to get the modular unit in place so that we can reclaim our sanctuary house get the needy animals back here where they need to belong and get the medical attention that they need.” And leave the larger building for the healthy animals that are ready for adoption.

The organization says the 50 animals that were in the damaged building were not hurt.”

If you have been thinking of getting a dog, this would be a great time to do it! If you can’t take on the responsibility of a pet at this time, consider making a donation to Tri-County Animal Rescue.

You’ll be saving a life and greatly improving yours. Dogs are amazing, supportive, and heroic companions who can make a huge difference in your world as a best friend, an exercise buddy, someone who can be trained to provide animal-assisted therapy and help those with challenges they may face, or simply be a fuzzy face to greet you after a hard day at work.
